Rosewood wasn’t Phil’s first protest. It was, however, his first arrest. By the time he was released on his own recognizance a couple of hours before dawn, he had long ago made up his mind that this arrest would also be his last.
Yawning, Phil shuffled out of the bland brightness of the booking room into the cramped hallway with its peeling paint and old-building smell. He was so tired even the tight pain in his chest from the confrontation with Thom felt dull and far away. If he could just make things right with Thom, maybe he’d actually be able to sleep once he got home.
Speaking of getting home… He’d promised to call Circe, but it was an absolutely ridiculous hour to call. His bike was still chained to one of the public racks around Pack Square. He could ride home and call her later. Right now, he’d rather be alone anyway.
Okay, so that wasn’t exactly true. Only a few blocks away was a certain pretty little blond who Phil ached to hold through the rest of the night and the entire coming day. Too bad he’d screwed up with said blond so badly he’d be lucky to ever be allowed to speak to him again, never mind cuddle him while he slept.
Turning the corner to the hallway leading outside, Phil stopped and blinked. Fuck, he must be going crazy. He wanted Thom so badly he was hallucinating him now.
Frowning, he crossed to the white plastic chair where the figment of his imagination sat with one foot tucked beneath him and his head resting against the wall. His eyes were closed, that sweet mouth open and slack with sleep.
It was, overall, an impressively vivid and detailed hallucination. So perfect Phil couldn’t resist the urge to touch. Moving with great care so as not to spoil the illusion, he reached out and brushed his fingertips over one soft porcelain cheek.
The smooth brow furrowed. Delicate eyelids fluttered open and sky blue eyes focused on Phil’s face. “Phil. Hi.”
Phil’s mouth fell open. He wasn’t seeing things at all. Thom was actually here.
The corners of Thom’s mouth quirked up in a halfhearted smile as Phil took a single reeling step backward. “I take it you didn’t expect me to be here.”
“Not exactly, no.” Phil stuck his hands in his back pockets and stared hard at Thom’s left earlobe. He didn’t think he could look Thom in the eye right then. “Um. So. What… I mean, are you… Uhhh…”
He’d never felt so stupid and tongue-tied in his life. Fortunately, Thom seemed to know what he was trying to say.
“You want to know what I’m doing here, and if I’m still mad.” Rising to his feet, Thom touched Phil’s elbow. “Look at me, would you?”
Reluctantly, Phil shifted his gaze to meet Thom’s. Thom’s eyes were as bloodshot as Phil’s felt, making the blue seem brighter than ever.
“I’m here because we seriously need to talk. Am I still mad?” Thom shrugged. “I reserve judgment on that until after the talking part.
